Country: Haiti

From 1 January to 31st December 2014, 27,753 suspected cholera cases and 296 fatalities were recorded by the Ministry of Health, which represents a decrease of 53% in the number of cases from 2013 to 2014 and a 50% reduction in cholera-related deaths compared with 2013.

The cholera incidence rate stands at 0.26 per cent, which is well below the target of 0.5 per cent set by the National Plan for the Elimination of Cholera. The cholera global fatality rate is at 1.06 per cent, slightly over the 1 per cent target rate set by the World Health Organization. The institutional fatality rate is 1.01 per cent, which is not meeting the 2014 target of 0.5 per cent.

Alerts continue to be recorded in the month of January 2015 throughout the country, including in Port-au-Prince. It is therefore essential to maintain adequate resources for the mobile team network and the alert system, coupled with improvement in long-term water, sanitation and health infrastructure. On the contrary, if the response falters and resources are not forthcoming, hard-won gains may be compromised and cholera could persist in Haiti
